MIDVALE, Utah – Beyond Inc., parent of “the new Bed Bath & Beyond,” plans to come full circle with a new site launch in the works.

By the end of 2024, the company will relaunch Overstock.com as a platform hewing to the brand’s original model: offering a cross-category assortment of liquidation merchandise.

This marks a relatively swift pivot. Overstock spent most of 2022 exiting non-home categories to establish itself as a home-only site offering value-priced furniture and home goods. Its acquisition of Bed Bath & Beyond’s intellectual property this past June and subsequent rebranding under that banner in August further expanded its total home proposition by amplifying soft goods and housewares.

The look of the new Overstock.com site will likely mirror the legacy site, but it will be crafted in a way that differentiates it from the current Bed Bath & Beyond platform, according to company CEO Jonathan Johnson.

“I don’t’ think that modeling it as a furniture or a home furnishings site is the thing to do,” he told investors during this morning’s call to review Q3 financial results.

There will be no merchandise overlap between the new Overstock.com and the current Bed Bath & Beyond platform. Products will be offered at “true liquidation prices,” he added.

Johnson also hinted that in the longer run, Beyond Inc. may field additional pure play platforms. He offered no details but noted that the company is “opportunistically and patiently looking at other targets to grow our ‘Beyond’ vision.”

  • Occasional tables including the Cupid coffee table, $999, and Mika side table, $599. Both are constructed of burl wood, with the Cupid table featuring contrasting strips of polar and elm burl veneer.

Apart from the furniture, Castlery is also releasing limited-edition tote bags to commemorate the anniversary and sporting the same signature fabrics as seen in the collection: Vivid Merlot and Chai Revival.

The 10th Anniversary Limited Edition Collection is available for purchase online. Founded in 2013, Castlery is available in more than 100 metropolitan areas across the U.S., Australia and Singapore.

Ethan Allen overcomes revenue hit to deliver strong gross margins https://www.furnituretoday.com/financial-results/ethan-allen-overcomes-revenue-hit-to-deliver-strong-gross-margins/ Thu, 26 Oct 2023 11:37:26 +0000 https://www.furnituretoday.com/?p=310178 Kathwari believes consumers are getting ready to turn their attention to refreshing their homes again.

DANBURY, Conn. — Top 100 retailer Ethan Allen saw orders drop off by double digits during its fiscal first quarter but managed to slice expenses by more than $11 million.

For the first quarter ended Sept. 30, consolidated net sales fell 23.6% to $163.9 million. Net income was halved, coming in at $14.94 million, or 62 cents adjusted per diluted share, compared with $29.88, or $1.11 adjusted per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter.

Sales were negatively impacted by $15 million due heavy flooding at Ethan Allen’s Vermont facility in September, which resulted in a pre-tax charge of $2.1 million. Retail net sales fell 23.6% to $163.9 million while wholesale net sales declined 13.3% to $99.4 million.

“We resumed limited operations during the second half of the quarter, and at this time, the majority of our associates are back at work,” said Farooq Kathwari, Ethan Allen’s chairman, president and CEO.

On the expense side, Ethan Allen managed to slash sales, general and administrative expenses down to $80.298 million compared with$91.962 million in last year’s first quarter. The company also reduced inventory levels, which ended the quarter at $149.6 million, 10.8% lower than a year ago.

“Despite these challenges, we were able to maintain a strong gross margin of 61.1% and an adjusted operating margin of 12.1%. We also continued to generate positive operating cash flow and as of Sept. 30, we had total cash and investments of $163.2 million and no debt,” said Kathwari.

Looking ahead, he said the company believes consumers are ready to begin refreshing their homes again following the 2022 pullback.

“After the major focus on consumers on their homes during the pandemic, we see consumers have spent more focus on time in other areas, such as travel. We expect to see that moderate (with) more focus on the home, although not at the level we saw during the COVID period,” he said.

Ethan Allen is responding by introducing new products into its assortments, “and we will continue to do so in the next 12 months.”

MIDVALE, Utah – Overstock is shaking off another vestige of its legacy operation with a new corporate identity and stock listing. The e-commerce home furnishings specialist – which acquired Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.’s intellectual property on June 28 – will rebrand as Beyond Inc. effective Nov. 6.

Overstock.com Inc. will continue to trade on the NASDAQ with ticker symbol OSTK until the close of market on Friday, Nov. 3. Beyond Inc. will begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange with ticker symbol BYON when markets open on Monday, Nov. 6. On that day, to celebrate the transfer, representatives of Beyond Inc. will ring the NYSE opening bell at 9:30 a.m. ET.

“Changing our corporate name to Beyond Inc. sets us up well for a brighter future,” said Jonathan Johnson, CEO. “The name ‘Beyond’ emphasizes our commitment to connect new and legacy customers with a wide assortment of products and services.”

Overstock relaunched its U.S. site on Aug. 1 under the Bed Bath & Beyond banner. The legacy Bed Bath e-commerce operation in Canada relaunched as  bedbathandbeyond.ca on June 29.

Despite an early surge of activity to the site following the rebrand, year-over-year revenue was showing a decline in the mid-teens for the period from July 1 through Sept. 4. The full quarter closed out on Sept. 30.

Overstock is scheduled to release its full third-quarter fiscal results tomorrow, Oct. 26, before the markets open and will webcast its conference call with investors at 8:30 a.m. ET.

LOS ANGELES — Z Gallerie, which recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the third time, has begun marking down its merchandise and closing its stores.

The contemporary furniture and home furnishings retailer engaged B. Riley Retail Solutions as its retail consultant to conduct the closing sales across the company’s 21 stores. All inventory, which includes furniture, lighting, home décor and bedding, is being marked down — starting at 40% — in connection with the event.

The retailer, which is owned by CSC Generation Holdings Inc., and does business as part of DirectBuy Home Improvement Inc., filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the District of New Jersey last week. CSC bought DirectBuy/ZGallerie out of bankruptcy in July 2019 for $20.3 million.

The limited-time event covers stores in nine states. Z Gallerie currently has five stores in California; seven in Florida; three in Texas; and one each Atlanta, suburban Chicago, Las Vegas, Maryland, New York and New Jersey.

“This is a unique opportunity to buy high-end, quality home décor at deeply discounted prices,” said Tim Shilling, executive vice president of B. Riley Retail Solutions.

Sales are final, although consumers who purchased Z Gallerie merchandise before Oct. 24 can still make returns with a receipt. The company is honoring Z Gallerie gift cards through Nov. 15.

SPRINGDALE, Ark. – An Arkansas furniture retailer is suing its insurance provider for allegedly failing to pay for repairs to one of its stores after a severe storm and tornado hit it early last year.

Brashears Furniture, which operates two stores in Northwest Arkansas and one in Southwest Missouri, filed a lawsuit against Ohio-based State Auto Property & Casualty mid-July for breach of contract and bad faith. The retailer says that its store in Springdale, Ark., was hit by an EF-3 tornado on March 30, 2022, which inflicted heavy interior and exterior damage. Brashears received an engineering analysis soon after, it alleges in the suit, which recommended the building be demolished and rebuilt. A bid for that was $4.1 million, says the retailer.

The insurance company rejected the bid and failed to make a counteroffer according to the suit, alleging it didn’t agree the building had to be destroyed and built again.

Brashears has received payment from Statue Auto, about $2.6 million. But after that, State Auto cancelled Brashears’ policy.

Brashears is suing for $263,500 in unpaid reimbursement of extended business income loss, as well as for losses in property, customers and vendor contracts.

Per the suit, Brashears says that it had to move the store’s remaining inventory to another location, as the building was unusable and irreparable. The company was able to make this happen for existing inventory, but orders for future inventory couldn’t be cancelled. Temporary storage space had to be obtained as a result, and that inventory had to be sold at a loss.

Brashears says it attempted to retain their employees “for months following the tornado” but eventually had to let them go as repairs still weren’t made. The retailer also says its customer base in the area has been lost. Its goodwill and reputation in the area for being a longstanding employer have been ruined, it says.

The store remains closed and damaged beyond repair, as well as being subjected to the elements, Brashears said.

State Auto has not returned request for comment. Per court filings, it denies any wrongdoing.

In an unrelated case, St. Louis furniture manufacturer Goebel Furniture is also in the midst of a lawsuit allegedly its insurance company failed to cover storm damage.
