Industry expert: How you can attract more and better employees

April 20, 2022

By Jaime Zepeda, Executive Vice President, Best Companies Group

More than 4 million people quit their jobs late last year. It was a new record at the time. In January of this year, it was almost bested by another 4 million leaving their current employer. The Great Resignation is real.

Even before this big shift some industries, like manufacturing, retail, hospitality and leisure, were already struggling to attract top talent.

I am a optimist, so I am not happy starting this column in a downer mood. But it’s important to call this out because of the opportunity therein. It is a golden talent opportunity that nobody is talking about. Let me explain.

Why do you think people are quitting in masses? Data is showing that it is not because they just want something new. And it is not all about the paycheck either. Despite what you might be hearing, money nor “flakiness” is not causing the talent crunch of 2022.

So what is? In a few words: Everyone wants to work at a best place to work.

People are seeking to work with collaborative colleagues, led by managers who know how to build great teams and in companies that value and invest in their people.

If you are reading this and nodding along, thinking, That’s us! We are that kind of company! Then this is where the opportunity comes in.

If you can stand out as an employer of choice you will attract more and better candidates. It will also be more sensible to your budget than giving everyone a pizza party (coming from a guy who loves pizza).

It’s not easy, though.

This is something I hear all the time from executives: We have a great company culture and care about our employees, but nobody knows that. People who don’t even work here are posting reviews that are ruining our reputation!

I’ve been in this business a long time, and it is unfortunately true that online workplace reviews often distort reality (usually in the negative).

So my suggestion is to get ahead of it and use a third party you and your current and prospective employees can trust. The “badge” of being an employer of choice needs to be data-driven and credible.

I led Best Companies Group, a company based in Harrisburg, Pa., that uses data and rigorous research to create Best Places to Work programs all over the world. In my mind, it is the easiest way to gain immediate credibility with great talent who can help your company fulfill its mission.

One of those programs is the Best Places to Work in Furniture, which is open for only a few more weeks. If you want to win the fight for talent, you must participate. It’s free, easy and trusted. Register here: https://bestcompaniesgroup.com/furniture-todays-best-places-to-work/
